HeartCode® BLS Online is a self-directed, comprehensive eLearning program that uses adaptive learning technology to allow learners to acquire and demonstrate Basic Life Support skills using a personalized learning path that adapts in real time to a learner’s performance. The program is designed for healthcare professionals who need Basic Life Support training for their clinical duties. Utilizing a variety of eLearning assets such as dramatizations, Cognitive Assessment Activities, illustrations, knowledge checks and interactive activities, this program teaches BLS knowledge and skills. This method of learning provides training consistency and adaptability to different learning styles. Students can work at their own pace applying their knowledge to real-time decision making. Debriefings and coaching are provided immediately after each knowledge check and each Cognitive Assessment Activity. The BLS Instructor Essentials Course is designed to prepare instructor candidates to teach AHA Instructor-led and blended learning courses. The course educates instructor candidates on how to adequately use AHA Instructor teaching materials, ensure that students meet learning objectives, offer student coaching skills, provide an objective skills performance evaluation, and follow AHA Instructor and course policies. The course covers core content and discipline-specific content required to teach AHA courses.

Both internal and external candidates will need to complete a phone interview with the Training Center Coordinator before their final acceptance into the course.

Internal candidates MUST have the following: Successful completion of their 90 probationary period, possess a current  BLS provider card, submit a letter of recommendation from their direct report manager, maintained current provider status for the past 3 years, and possess a clean record of performance.   

****NOTE: This 2-day Basic ALCS class is for first time ACLS certification status or if you previously had an ACLS card but it has since expired; you will need to re-take the 2-Day Basic ACLS class****

All of our ACLS courses automatically include BLS provider renewal.  There is no option to take one without BLS.

This is followed by a skills assessment that is completed in the classroom under direct instructor supervision. A skills assessment with an AHA Instructor is required to earn a valid AHA PALS Provider eCard that is valid for two years.

Topics covered in this course are:

  • High-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Differentiation between patients who do require and do not require immediate interventions
  • Performance as a high-performance team member
  • Differentiation between respiratory distress and respiratory failure
  • Management of respiratory distress and respiratory failure
  • Differentiation between compensated and hypotensive (decompensated) shock
  • Differentiation between types of shock
  • Early interventions for the treatment of shock
  • Bradycardic and tachycardic rhythms
  • Clinical characteristics of instability in patients with arrhythmias
  • Cardiac arrest and post-cardiac arrest management

This course is for Penn State Health West Region & Life Lion employees only.  If you are not employed by one of the PSH West Region medical centers or by Life Lion DO NOT sign up for this course. The Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) course conveys an evidence-based approach to care of the newborn at birth and facilitates effective team-based care for healthcare professionals who care for newborns at the time of delivery.  NRP utilizes a blended learning approach, which includes online testing and hands-on case-based simulation/debriefing that focus on critical leadership, communication, and team-work skills.

What is S.T.A.B.L.E.?

STABLE is the most widely distributed and implemented neonatal education program to focus exclusively on the post-resuscitation/pre-transport stablization care of sick infants.  Based on a nemonic to optimize learning, retention and recall of information, S.T.A.B.L.E. stands for the six assessment and care modules in the program: Sugar, Tempreture, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work, and Emotional support.  A 7th module, Quality Improvement, stresses communication and teamwork as well as the professional responsibility of evaluating care provided to sick infants, with the ultimate goal of improving future care.

This course is recommended for those professions who deliver direct care to newborns or who may be involved in the delvery of newborns.  

Due to limited seating, this course is available for Penn State Health employees only and is not open to the public.  

Those completing the course will receive a certification card that is good for two years.
